How to remove vocals (mostly) from mp3's

  1. Download and install Audacity
  2. Download and save (don't open) this file into the Audacity folder (C\Program Files\Audacity x.x.x)
  3. Open Audacity
  4. The first time you open Audacity, you'll need to do the following to be able to save mp3's:
    • Click "Edit" -> "Preferences"; in the Preferences dialog, click on "Import/Export"
    • Click on the button labeled "Locate..." next to "MP3 Library", and navigate to the file you just downloaded (lame_enc.dll) It's safe - it just tells Audacity how to handle mp3's
    • Click "OK"
    • That's it! Now back to the fun...
  5. Drag and drop the desired mp3 file into Audacity (in the large gray open area)
  6. Click on "Effect" -> "Vocal Remover (for center-panned vocals)..."
  7. Click "OK"
  8. Under "File", select "Export..."
  9. Click "OK" on the dialog that pops up (this is just confirming the meta-tagging info)
  10. Choose a name, a place, and the file type (mp3, wav, etc...) to save it as.

It only works on stereo tracks that have the instruments on the sides and vocals centered; what it does is basically remove whatever is identical on both channels. On some music, the vocals are split off to one side, and this technique wouldn't work for those. On the other hand, most "Oldies" of the type usually sung by the Karaoke crowd will work just fine.

Here's a snippet of un-edited music: Let 'Er Rip
The same thing with vocals removed: Let 'Er Rip (no vocals)

This method almost always leaves some vocals on the track, but they're very faint, and you'll cover them up with your own voice when you sing along.

Go ahead and sing along to Johnny Cash while you think about it:
